UAM BASEBALL SET FOR FIRST TRUE ROAD TEST

WEEKLY INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH JOHN HARVEY

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team will face its first true road test this weekend as the team faces off against the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs in Weatherford, Okla. for a three-game Great American Conference series.

The Boll Weevils (8-3, 3-0 GAC) opened the season in Houston, Texas at the Astros In Action DII Invitational, but this weekend’s games will be UAM’s first contests played against a team at their opponent’s home facility.

UAM is currently riding a seven-game winning streak, all seven victories coming at the friendly confines of Weevils Field. Those seven victories have vaulted UAM to the No. 8 spot in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Regional Rankings. The Weevils also received one vote in this week’s College Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30 Poll.

Most recently, UAM posted a 13-0 victory over Lyon College at home this past Tuesday. The run production overshadowed a stellar outing from three UAM pitchers, who only allowed a combined three hits in the shutout victory. Prior to Tuesday’s non-conference win, UAM posted a three-game conference sweep over Northwestern Oklahoma State at Weevils Field, highlighted by a pair of walk-off wins in the bottom of the ninth.

UAM is second in the Great American Conference in hitting with a team batting average of .328. The Boll Weevils lead the league in slugging percentage (.510), on base percentage (.438), runs scored (99), runs batted in (90) and home runs (11).

UAM’s opponent this weekend, Southwestern Oklahoma State, is currently on a five-game losing skid, dropping a pair of non-conference games to Cameron this past Tuesday after being swept by then 15th-ranked Southern Arkansas on the road this past weekend in three close games (7-6, 5-3, 6-3). The Bulldogs are 5-5 overall and 0-3 in GAC games.

The Bulldogs rank seventh in the GAC in hitting (.296 team batting average) and fourth in pitching (4.09 team earned run average).

This weekend’s series gets started on Saturday, February 23 with a double-header starting at noon. The series finale is set for Sunday, also starting at noon.
