SWOSU USES FIVE-RUN SIXTH TO GET PAST UAM, 8-3

WEATHERFORD, Okla. —
Southwestern Oklahoma State posted a five-run sixth inning and scored six unanswered runs to record an 8-3 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team on Saturday in Great American Conference action.

The Boll Weevils (8-4, 3-1 GAC) led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth after a two-run fourth and a one-run fifth before SWOSU (6-5, 1-3 GAC) rallied for five runs off six hits in the inning to take a 7-3 lead. The Bulldogs added their final run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Kevin Cantre.

UAM got on the board in the fourth on an RBI fielder’s choice from senior Hunter Allday, followed by a sacrifice fly out from junior Ray Johnson. UAM took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI triple from senior Taylor Eaves.

SWOSU made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice from Dietrick Tur. The Bulldogs started the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Brandon Ruiz to score leadoff hitter JR Head, who reached on an error to start the inning.

Senior starter Bobby Bryan (2-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) off nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk in the first 5.1 innings. SWOSU starter Calyn Young (2-1) earned the victory after allowing three runs off four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in the first 7.1 innings.

The Boll Weevils and Bulldogs conclude the three-game series on Sunday with a double-header starting at noon.
