MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team left 12 runners on base and committed four errors leading to four runs in an 8-0 loss to No. 22 Arkansas Tech on Friday at home in the opening game of a three-game Great American Conference series.
Junior Ben Agredano led UAM (15-10, 7-6 GAC) with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, including a walk. Junior Alex Lang went 1-for-3 with two walks. Seniors Hunter Allday and Taylor Eaves accounted for UAM’s other two hits.
The Wonder Boys (20-7, 8-2 GAC) scored one run in each of the first three innings on only two hits combined. ATU opened the scoring in the first on an RBI groundout from James Sharp to score Cesar Abreu, who doubled to lead off the inning. ATU added another run in the second on back-to-back UAM fielding errors. The Wonder Boys went up 3-0 in the third on a sac fly from Jonathan Finnegan to score Cole Fergus, who led off the inning with a double.
UAM held ATU scoreless over the next four innings before the Wonder Boys put up three unearned runs in the eighth, again taking advantage of a UAM fielding error. ATU finalized the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from Zac Johnson and a sac fly from Drew Stanton. ATU’s final inning at bat was prolonged with two hit batters.
UAM left the bases loaded twice during the contest, once in the bottom of the first and again in the seventh.
Senior Bobby Bryan (3-3) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) off just three hits with a strikeout and three walks in the first five innings. Ryan Taylor (5-1) earned the win for the Wonder Boys after allowing just two hits with five strikeouts and five walks in the first six innings. ATU’s Ethan Crocker earned his second save of the year after keeping UAM scoreless on just three hits in the final three innings.
The Boll Weevils and Wonder Boys conclude the three-game GAC series on Saturday with a double-header starting at noon at Weevils Field.
