UAM BASEBALL DROPS HSU SERIES WITH SATURDAY LOSSES

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Henderson State on Saturday to give the Reddies a 2-1 series win. Final scores on Saturday were 3-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second game. UAM defeated HSU 8-5 on Friday in the series opener. With Saturday’s losses, UAM drops to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the Great American Conference. HSU improves to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the GAC.

GAME 1 --- BOX SCORE
Junior Ray Johnson continued his weekend offensive production by giving UAM an early lead on an RBI lineout to left field in the top of the first inning to score junior Alex Lang, who reached on an error to lead off the game and moved around to third on singles from junior Ben Agredano and senior Hunter Allday. UAM scored another unearned run in the top of the fifth on a fielding error by the HSU third baseman to allow senior T.J. Cox to score from second base. Cox doubled to lead off the inning.

HSU scored a run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, and added two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a passed ball, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Senior Kenny Marshall (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in the first six innings.

GAME 2 --- BOX SCORE
UAM again struck in the top of the first on an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore Bronson Gillam to score Alex Lang from third. Lang lead off the inning with a single and moved to third on an HSU fielding error.

UAM would be limited to just two scoring opportunities from that point on, getting a single from junior D'Marco Poindexter in the third, who moved to second on a sac bunt and took third on a groundout. UAM's final opportunity came in the top of the seventh, getting an infield single from junior Stephen Martinez, followed by a walk from Cox to give UAM runners on first and second with just one out. HSU reliever Jordan Wright quieted the rally by setting down junior Johnny Wolf on a flyout to right field, and catching Poindexter looking at strike three to end the game.

HSU scratched across one run in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings.

Junior Chris Guzman (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) with one strikeout and no walks in the first five innings.

The Boll Weevils have a chance to even the season series against the Reddies this Tuesday at home in a single non-conference game starting at 2 p.m. at Weevils Field.
