MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered two losses to No. 13 Southern Arkansas on Saturday on the road to open a three-game Great American Conference series. Final scores were 12-3 and 4-3.
In the first game, UAM (28-18) scored a run in the top of the third on an RBI single from junior D’Marco Poindexter, who also had a run-producing single in the fifth inning to force a 2-all tie.
SAU (36-13) scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth, before scoring three in the seventh and five in the eight to earn the lop-sided win. UAM added its final score on an RBI sac fly from junior Ben Agredano in the top of the eighth.
Poindexter went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs batted in and one run scored. Senior Hunter Allday finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Senior Bobby Bryan (4-4) suffered the loss after allowing four runs off six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the first four innings. SAU starter James Baune (10-1) earned the complete-game victory, allowing three runs off 10 hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in nine innings of work.
In the second game, UAM broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from junior Alex Lang. The Boll Weevils took a 3-0 lead in the sixth on a two-run homerun by senior T.J. Cox.
SAU chipped away in the final two innings with two runs in each frame. SAU’s David Harris gave SAU its first runs of the game on a two-run triple from David Harris in the sixth.
In the seventh, SAU had back-to-back singles from Tyler Cameron and Jackson McCurdy to start the inning, and a sac bunt from Ryan Bell moved the runners into scoring position. Following a strikeout from pinch-hitter Phillip Menou, SAU’s Jason Dahl hit a single to left field, and both runners were able to score after the throw to the plate got away from the catcher on the tag attempt.
After giving up only one hit in the first five innings, UAM sophomore starter Logan Johnson (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing all four runs off six hits with one strikeout and two walks in the first six innings of a seven-inning game.
SAU received its second straight complete-game effort from its starting pitcher with Jon Mark Abbey earning the win after allowing three runs off five hits with nine strikeout and three walks in seven innings of work.
The Boll Weevils and Muleriders conclude the 2013 regular season with the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
