ENID, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was defeated by No. 1 seed Southern Arkansas on Monday by a final score of 11-2 to send SAU into the tournament finals and UAM into an elimination game against No. 6 seed Harding on Tuesday at noon.
The winner of the UAM-Harding game will face Southern Arkansas for the championship at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
In Monday’s loss to SAU, the Boll Weevils got on the board in the bottom of the first on a sac fly from junior Ben Agredano to score junior D’Marco Poindexter, who led off the inning with a single.
It was all SAU from that point on. The Muleriders took the lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run homerun from Ryan Dardenne. SAU’s David Harris gave SAU a 3-1 lead in the third on an RBI single.
Harris’ day was far from over as he hit homeruns in his next two at bats. A solo shot from Harris in the fifth gave the Muleriders a 4-1 lead. In the sixth inning, SAU scored six runs on just one hit after taking advantage of four straight walks to start the inning. Harris capped the six-run rally with a three-run inside-the-park homerun.
The Muleriders finalized their scoring on an RBI infield single from Jason Dahl in the top of the ninth inning.
UAM capped the scoring in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double from senior Taylor Eaves to score junior Alex Lang, who walked to lead off the inning.
Senior Bobby Bryan (4-5) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) off five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in the first five innings. Timothy Buchanan (9-1) earned the win for SAU with one run allowed off seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in the first eight innings.
