UAM BASEBALL FALLS TO SAU IN GAC TOURNAMENT TITLE GAME

ENID, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated Harding in the Great American Conference Championship Tournament Semi-Finals on Tuesday by a final score of 4-2, but fell to Southern Arkansas in the finals by a final score of 11-2 for a runner-up finish in the event to cap the second most successful season in program history.

With Tuesday’s split, the Boll Weevils finish the season with an overall record of 32-20, two wins shy of the all-time record set by the 2006 squad that finished the year 34-25. UAM received three selections to the GAC Championship All-Tournament Team with junior catcher Chad Miller, senior third baseman Taylor Eaves and junior second baseman Ben Agredano all honored for their performances throughout five games over the past four days.

In the win over Harding, the Weevils got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Agredano. UAM added two more runs in the second on back-to-back RBI groundouts from junior Alex Lang and junior D’Marco Poindexter. UAM capped its scoring in the fourth on a sac fly from senior Hunter Allday.

The Bisons (29-22) got on the board in sixth on a sac fly from James Anderson and added one more run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI single from Billy Ninemire.

Sophomore Logan Johnson (3-1) earned the win after allowing one runs off eight hits with no strikeouts and just one walk allowed in the first 6.2 innings. Senior Brent Noble earned his second save of the season, and fourth of his four-year career, allowing just one run off five hits with one strikeout and no walks in the final 2.1 innings. Noble finishes his career with a UAM all-time record of 76 appearances after also making an appearance in the loss to SAU.

In the GAC championship game, SAU took advantage of six errors for the lop-sided victory. SAU scored three runs in the second, five in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Muleriders (40-15)  finished the game with 13 hits to capture the program’s second consecutive Great American Conference Tournament Championship.

UAM got on the board with one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings on an RBI single from Eaves in the seventh and taking advantage of an SAU error for a run in the eighth.

Junior Kade Garlington (3-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) off six hits with one strikeout and one walk in the first 3.2 innings. Seniors Eddie Smith and Brent Noble close out the final 5.1 innings, allowing a combined three runs off seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
