JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Union UniversityTri-Match, falling to host Union 3-1 before defeating Victory University 3-0.
Final games scores of the 3-1 loss to Union were 14-25, 17-25, 25-20 and 22-25. Final game scores of the three-set sweep over Victory were 25-21, 25-12 and25-16.
In the loss to Union (3-8), the Blossoms (5-7) were limited to a sub-100 hitting percentage with 34 kills on 133 attempts with 22 errors for a final.090 percentage. Union countered with a .171 percentage after totaling 52 kills on 146 attempts with 27 errors.
UAM was led by junior Jessica Cuba in the loss, who finished one kill away from her first career double-double. The Georgetown, Texas native totaled nine kills on 35 attempts with three errors, while also totaling 17 digs.
The Blossoms totaled 10 blocks in the loss, led by junior Tasha Evans with six block assists. Junior Christina Rini added five block assists. Senior Tusalava Kuaea paced the back row with 19 digs, while senior Amy Bazemore tallied a team-high 28 assists, her ninth match of at least 20 assists this season.
Union was led by three players with double-digit kills. Kristin Cook and Mallory Baker each had 11, while Deja Moore added 10.
In the three-set victory over Victory (6-4), UAM's third sweep of the season, the Blossoms improved their hitting percentage by nearly 200 percentage points from its morning loss to Union with a .268 hitting percentage following 43 kills on 97 swings with 17 errors.
Senior Tori Bozzo matched her season-high in kills in the win, totaling 13 kills on 27 swings with only three errors for a .370 individual percentage. Cuba added seven kills and nine digs, while also tallying four service aces.
Kuaea once again paced the UAM defense with 14 digs. Bazemore turned in 28 assists.
Victory was led by Collette Sample's eight kills.
The Blossoms are back to the Great American Conference portion of the schedule this week at home against Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday, September 24 at 6 p.m. and against Southern Arkansas on Thursday, September 26 at 7 p.m.
