MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team allowed less than 40 points in a game for the second time since 2005 in a 76-37 victory over Missouri S&T at home on Tuesday.
The Blossoms defeated LeMoyne-Owen College last year at home 95-36. Before that, the last time UAM held an opponent to less than 40 points in a win was January 13, 2005 in a 60-39 victory over Delta State at home.
In Tuesday's win over S&T (3-2), the Blossoms (2-2) limited the Miners to 10 points in the first half and 27 in the second half. UAM took advantage of 17 S&T turnovers for 21 points and ended the game shooting 43 percent from the field (29-for-68) following a 56 percent performance in the second half.
Junior Jordan Goforth paced the Blossoms with her third career double-double, going 10-for-15 from the field for 26 points, while also collecting a game-high 11 rebounds. Junior Nikki Mullen and freshman Taylor Collins also reached double-figures in scoring with 18 and 13 points, respectively.
UAM led for nearly 38 minutes of the game and never trailed as both teams went scoreless over the first two minutes. The Blossoms reached a double-digit lead at the 14:10 mark on a three-pointer from Mullen and later led by as much as 19 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, UAM got on top by 20 points at the 15:05 mark on a layup from Goforth. That bucket sparked a 14-1 run over the next five minutes to put the Blossoms up 32 with 9:29 remaining. UAM reached a 40-point lead in the final five minutes, leading by as much as 45 on a layup from senior Brandae Carroll with 1:34 remaining.
The Blossoms finished the game with a 51-31 edge in rebounding, including an 18-2 advantage on the offensive glass.
Jamy Douvier and Brittany Andersen led the Miners with seven points each.
The Blossoms are back in action this weekend in Pensacola, Florida at the University of West Florida Thanksgiving Invitational. UAM plays the host, West Florida, on Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on either Central Missouri or USC-Aiken on Saturday at noon.
