ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team used a pair of 7-0 scoring runs at the end of each half to record a come-from-behind 66-62 road victory over Henderson State on Thursday evening.
Down by as much as seven points in the second half, including with 5:38 remaining in regulation, the Blossoms (3-4, 2-1 Great American Conference) responded with six straight points, including a pair of a layups from junior Jordan Goforth, to cut the deficit to just one point with 3:58 remaining. The Reddies (2-6, 0-3 GAC) answered with a three-pointer to keep the lead.
UAM fought back once again to force the game's seventh tie score at 57-all on a tip-in by junior Nikki Mullen. Again, HSU answered with a three-pointer to regain the lead.
Over the final 1:30, UAM outscored HSU 9-2, including the go-ahead score, a layup by Goforth with 24 seconds remaining. The Blossoms kept HSU from responding on the other end by forcing a turnover with eight seconds remaining.
In the first half, the Reddies built a double-digit lead by the 11:46 mark, leading 15-4 on a jumper from Vanessa Pieper. The Blossoms responded with a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a three-point lead on a layup from Goforth at the 4:34 mark. After HSU built its lead back to as much as five points, UAM closed out the half on a 7-0 run to hold a 29-27 lead at the break.
Overall, UAM shot 46 percent from the field (27-for-59), 31 percent on three-pointers (5-for-16) and 78 percent on foul shots (7-for-9). The Reddies finished at 43 percent from the field (22-for-51), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-for-20) and 71 percent on foul shots (12-for-17).
Goforth led all scorers with 21 points on a 10-for-17 shooting performance. She tied junior teammate Nelsha Peterson for the team-high in rebounds with six. Peterson and Mullen also reached double-figured in scoring with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Annie Thomas led the Lady Reddies with 14 points. Deidra McCoy and Vanessa Pieper added 10 points each.
The Blossoms are back in action on Saturday at home against 20th-ranked Harding. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
