HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team tallied six extra base hits in a 7-2 win over Arkansas Tech at Minute Maid Park on Saturday in the first NCAA Division II game of the season.
UAM had 10 hits total in the win, including five doubles and one homerun.
Both teams plated one run in the second inning. Senior Alex Lang was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top half of the inning to drive in senior Ray Johnson, who doubled earlier to reach and moved to third on a wild pitch. UAM left the bases loaded that inning for three of its final 12 runners left on base in the game. Tech answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Mike Kattula.
The Weevils regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from junior Austin Braddock followed by an RBI double from junior Bronson Gillam. UAM grabbed a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun from sophomore Corey Wood.
ATU answered in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Zack Johnson to give UAM a 4-2 lead.
UAM finalized the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning, starting with an RBI double from senior Ben Agredano to score sophomore Evan Comeau, who started the rally with a one-out double to left center. Braddock drove in his second run of day and picked up his game-high third hit of the day with a double to right field to score Agredano. Gillam drove in Braddock on an RBIsingle in the next at bat.
Junior Josh Mingura (1-0) earned the win in the opener with two runs allowed (one earned) off six hits in the first five innings. Mingura had two strikeouts and did not allow a walk. Sophomore Gavin Johnston and junior Jeff Harvill closed the door on the Wonder Boys in the final four innings. Johnston faced only batters over the minimum in his three no-hit innings, while Harvill allowed one hit to four batters in the ninth.
Ryan Taylor (0-1) took the loss for Tech, allowing three runs off four hitswith five walks in the 3.2 innings.
The Weevils are back in action at the Houston Winter Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m. against St. Mary's.
