ALVA, Okla. –
The 15th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team recorded a double-header split with Northwestern Oklahoma State on the road on Saturday in the first Great American Conference games for both teams, losing the first game 8-3 and winning the second game 3-2.

The Rangers (5-2, 1-1 GAC) opened the double header with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead, highlighted by a pair of homeruns. After three scoreless innings following that first inning rally for NWOSU, UAM (6-2, 1-1 GAC) chipped away with two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run single from senior Ray Johnson.

UAM got to within two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double from senior D'Marco Poindexter to score senior Alex Lang, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Evan Comeau.

That was it for the Weevils though as NWOSU tacked on two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to seal the series opening win.

Senior Kade Garlington (1-2) took the loss for UAM after giving up five runs (four earned) off seven hits in the first three innings. Corey Korenic (2-1) picked up the win for the Rangers, allowing two runs off three hits in the first 4.2 innings.

In the nightcap, UAM came from behind with a two-run homerun by sophomore Travis Steinke in the top of the sixth inning of the scheduled seven inning game to salvage the double header split.

The Rangers opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and UAM answered with one run in the top of the second on a sac fly by sophomore Mitchell Dornblut to score sophomore Corey Wood, who singled earlier in the inning.

Both UAM and NWOSU received complete-game efforts from their starting pitchers. UAM junior Logan Johnson (2-0) earned the win after allowing two runs off five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Zach Postoak (0-1) took the loss for NWOSU, giving up three runs off seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The two squads meet again on Sunday to decide the series in a single, nine-inning game starting at noon.
