ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The 11th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split with Ouachita Baptist on Saturday in Arkadelphia, losing the first game 6-0 before taking the second game 4-1.
In the first game, UAM (15-7, 7-5 Great American Conference) was limited to four hits as OBU starter Luis DeJesus (3-2) went the distance, keeping UAM scoreless while striking out eight and walking two in nine innings of work. The Weevils reached second base only once. The game one loss gave OBU the series victory, marking UAM's first series loss so far this season.
Senior D'Marco Poindexter racked up half of UAM's hits with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate. Sophomore Zach McKnight (2-1) took the loss after giving up three runs off six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in the first 4.1 innings.
In the second game, UAM rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Senior Ben Agredano laced a two-run single through the left side of the infield, and then scored on junior Austin Braddock's double to left in the next at bat.
The Weevils took advantage of a pair of OBU errors to plate one run in the top of the first. OBU forced the 1-1 tie on RBI double from Keegan Ghiddoti in the bottom of the second.
Senior Kade Garlington (4-2) earned the win after giving up one run off five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the first six innings of the scheduled seven-inning game. Senior Jeff Harvill picked up his fifth save of the season by striking out three in the bottom of the seventh. OBU's Craig Daniel (0-3) took the loss after giving up four runs off six hits in the first four innings.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Weevils have added a double-header at Drury University on Tuesday, March 11 starting at 3 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. The road double header against LeMoyne-Owen College has been cancelled.
