MONTICELLO –
The 25th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team picked up its 13th consecutive Great American Conference victory by defeating 12th-ranked Southern Arkansas in 10 innings on Friday at home by a final score of 5-4.

Each team was plagued by errors in Friday's series opener. The Weevils (32-12, 21-7 GAC) allowed two unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of two errors and later gave up an unearned run off a throwing error in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

UAM plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th off a throwing error from the SAU shortstop. Senior D'Marco Poindexter led of the inning with a single up the middle, moved to second on sacrifice bunt by senior Tyler Caruthers and covered two bases on what should have been a groundout to shortstop during sophomore Evan Comeau's at bat. Instead, the throw could not be handled at first base, giving Poindexter enough time to cross the plate.

Following SAU's two-run first, UAM tied the game with single runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings off an SAU wild pitch in the second and an RBI single by sophomore Corey Wood in the fourth.

The Muleriders (33-15, 17-11 GAC) regained the lead off an RBI single by Jackson McCurdy in the top of the fifth.

Seniors Ray Johnson and Chad Miller each had an RBI single in UAM's two-run fifth to give the Weevils a 4-3 lead, the last runs scored before the error in the ninth.

UAM pounded out 12 hits in the win, two hits each for Johnson, Wood, Caruthers, junior Bronson Gillam and senior Ben Agredano. SAU's Josh Rodriguez had two of SAU's seven total hits in the contest.

UAM sophomore starter Zach McKnight earned a no decision after allowing just one earned run off six hits in the first eight innings. The Bentonville, Arkansas native struck out five and walked three of the 35 total batters he faced. Junior Kregg Snook (2-1) earned the win in relief after striking out the only batter he faced in the top of the 10th inning. SAU's Preston Gray (3-3) took the loss despite giving up just one hit in his inning of relief.

With UAM and Arkansas Tech both earning wins on Friday, the Weevils have clinched the No. 2 seed in next weekend's GAC Championship Tournament. UAM's chances of earning a share of the league's regular season championship remain alive. The Weevils need two wins over SAU on Saturday and two Arkansas Tech losses to Harding.

UAM and SAU are set to conclude the series with a double header on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Weevils Field. Saturday is Senior Day for 11 Boll Weevils playing their final home games. The Senior Day ceremony is set for 12:30 p.m.
