MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team suffered its sixth straight defeat on Saturday at home in a 95-91 overtime loss to Henderson State inside Steelman Field House.
In the first half, the Weevils got on top of the Reddies by as much as 13 points on six different occasions in the final six minutes and took an 11-point lead of 45-34 into the locker room at the break.
UAM maintained its double-digit lead for most of the first six minutes of the second half before HSU started chipping away, getting the deficit down to six points with 11:52 remaining and three points on a dunk from Reggie Murphy with 8:42 left. That dunk gave UAM a 64-61 advantage.
UAM's Jamal Peterson scored a pair of baskets over the next minute to put UAM back on top by seven points, which was UAM's largest lead for the remainder of the game. The Reddies got the deficit down to one point with 6:14 remaining and took the lead for the first time since the game's first possession on a three-pointer by Kevin Kozan with 2:45 on the clock to put HSU up 79-78. Both teams made a basket over the next minute and UAM's Sharif Hudson made one of two free throws with 37 seconds remaining to finalize the scoring in regulation at 81-all.
Hudson had another opportunity following a backcourt violation by the Reddies with seven seconds remaining, but his jumper missed at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, UAM's second extra period of the season.
In overtime, HSU's Aaron Cooper made four free throws in the final 30 seconds to keep UAM from ever tying the score or gaining the lead. HSU outscored UAM 14-10 in the extra five minutes, eight points coming at the free throw line to surpass the team's total of made free throws in regulation.
UAM's starting five all reached double-digits in scoring, led by Peterson with 23 points. Richard Benedyth added 21 points and a career-high 10 assists for his first double-double. D'Audrio Patton finished with 14 points. Cameron Blue and Sharif Hudson each had 10 points in the loss.
HSU's Reggie Murphy led all players with 35 points and 13 rebounds.
The Weevils are back in action on Thursday, February 5 on the road against Southern Nazarene.
