@UAMWBB OPENS WITH GAC ROAD WIN OVER SOUTHEASTERN

DURANT, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 regular season with a 67-62 Great American Conference road victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday inside Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The Blossoms (1-0, 1-0 GAC) opened up with 28 points in the first 10 minutes, but were limited to eight points in the second period to allow Southeastern (0-3, 0-1 GAC) back in the game. UAM led the Savage Storm 36-31 at the halftime break.

Both teams scored 17 points in the second half. Southeastern took its first lead since early in the first period just two minutes into the third period on what ended up being a 7-0 run for the Storm to start the second half.

UAM closed out the final three minutes of the third period on a 10-2 run to hold a five-point lead of 53-48 heading into the final 10-minute period. In the fourth period, both teams again matched each other in scoring at 14-all.

Southeastern took a two-point lead with 2:25 remaining, but the Blossoms answered with an 10-1 run to hold a 67-60 lead with 10 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws from senior Courtni Gibson.

Senior Jordan Goforth led all scorers and rebounders with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also posted a game-high seven assists in the win. Senior Nelsha Peterson followed with 17 points and nine rebounds. Senior Nikki Mullen and Gibson also reached double-digits in points with 13 and 10, respectively.

UAM finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field (25-for-57), 17 percent on three-pointers (3-for-18) and 67 percent on foul shots (14-for-21). Southeastern shot 34 percent from the field (22-for-65), 26 percent on three-pointers (7-for-27) and 79 percent on foul shots (11-for-14).

The Blossoms are back in action on Saturday against East Central. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Ada, Oklahoma.
