SAN ANTONIO, Texas — University of Arkansas at Monticello senior women's basketball player Jordan Goforth scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Blossoms to an 83-76 victory over Angelo State on Saturday in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
Goforth's 35 points in the win over Angelo State marks the first time since 2001 that a UAM women's basketball player scored at least 35 points in a single game. The last time was a 37-point outing from Krisztina Hollosy on January 6, 2001 in a 69-64 loss to Harding. It was the second game of Goforth's career with at least 30 points.
The Plano, Texas native finished Saturday night's win 12-for-23 from the field, 2-for-6 on three-pointers and a perfect 9-for-9 on foul shots. She also led the team in rebounding with 10 for her second double-double of the year.
The Blossoms (2-2) started Saturday's win by scoring the game's first six points, all from senior Nikki Mullen with a layup, a free throw and a three-pointer. UAM eventually jumped out to a double-digit lead midway through the first period on a three-pointer from sophomore Taylor Collins to put the Blossoms up 12-2.
The Belles (3-1) later put together a 10-0 run to hold a 19-18 lead at the start of the second period. The Blossoms won a back-and-forth battle in the second period to hold a one-point lead of 37-36 at the halftime break.
Angelo State held a two-point lead at the start of the fourth period, but UAM more than doubled its output from the third period with 32 points in the final 10 minutes. With the Belles forced to foul late, the Blossoms took advantage of their free-throw opportunities by sinking 10-of-13 foul shots in the final period. Goforth scored 21 of her points in the last period. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 8-for-8 on foul shots during the last 10 minutes.
The Blossoms ended the game at 48 percent from the field (31-for-65), 33 percent on three-pointers (8-for-24) and 72 percent on foul shots (13-for-18). Mullen, freshman Ayesha Wahid and Collins also reached double-digits in scoring with 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore Cheridan Burroughs was second to Goforth in rebounding with eight.
Jasmine Prophet and Taylor Dorsey led the previously unbeaten Belles with 18 points each.
