MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team recorded a 74-71 Great American Conference victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday night in the Blossoms' first home game of the season.
UAM (3-2, 2-1 GAC) finished the game with a slight 42-38 percent edge in field goal shooting and a 47-35 final advantage in rebounding.
The Bulldogs (1-5, 0-3 GAC) controlled the majority of the first period and even led by as much as seven points at the 3:12 mark. The Blossoms fought back in the second period to force the first tie score of the game since the opening tipoff with a three-pointer from sophomore Taylor Collins at the 5:44 mark.
SWOSU responded with a 9-1 run over the next four minutes to get back on top by as much as eight points with 1:41 remaining before halftime. The Blossoms closed the final 1:41 of the second period on a 7-0 run to cut their deficit down to just one point at the break with SWOSU up 33-32.
Senior Jordan Goforth scored two of her final 23 points to open the second half scoring, which set up a back-and-forth scoring battle with the Bulldogs throughout most of the period. UAM used a 9-3 scoring run in the final 2:46 of the third period to take a three-point lead heading into the final 10-minute period.
UAM and SWOSU again answered each other in the early part of the fourth period with neither team leading by more than three points before a three-pointer from UAM freshman Ayesha Wahid gave the Blossoms a five-point advantage with 3:10 remaining. The Bulldogs cut it back to a one-point game, but never were able to force another tie score or lead change throughout the remainder of the contest. There were a total of five tie scores and 11 lead changes in the game.
Goforth picked up her second straight double-double and third overall of the year with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. She also had five assists and two steals in the win.
Sophomore Cheridan Burroughs earned her first career double-double on Thursday against SWOSU with 13 points and 11 boards in 26 minutes of action. Collins also reached double-digits in scoring with 16 points. Senior Courtni Gibson had a team-high six assists in the win.
SWOSU was led in scoring by Jade Jones and Jessica Penner with 13 points each.
The Blossoms are back in action on Saturday against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
