MONTICELLO — Senior Jordan Goforth became the Great American Conference's career scoring leader with 30 points in the University of Arkansas at Monticello's 68-64 non-conference victory over Philander Smith at home on Thursday afternoon.
Goforth reached the 30-point mark for the second consecutive game and fourth overall of her career. The Plano, Texas native also led the team in rebounds with 12 for her fourth straight double-double. She now has 1,422 career points, surpassing Aminata Fall's previous conference lead of 1,415 career points from 2012-15 at Southern Nazarene. Goforth also moved up one spot on UAM's career scoring chart to No. 8.
Thursday's win over Philander Smith (8-4) was the fourth consecutive victory for the Blossoms (5-2). After a slow scoring output from both teams early on, the Blossoms put together an 18-0 run at the end of the first period and carrying over into second period to hold a 26-10 advantage with 6:41 remaining before halftime.
UAM led 37-24 at the break after outscoring the Lady Panthers 24-14 in the second period. PSC turned the tables in the third period, outscoring UAM by 10 and forcing three tie scores in the final two minutes. UAM sophomore Taylor Collins nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds of the third period to give the Blossoms a 49-46 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
At the 6:10 mark of the fourth period, PSC's Jequecia Chaney made a jumper to give the Lady Panthers their first lead of the game since the final minute of the first period. The Blossoms quickly negated that with a three-pointer on the other end from senior Nikki Mullen. That was the last lead change of the game despite one more tie score on a three-pointer from PSC's Brittany Leonard with 3:32 remaining in regulation. There were a total of five lead changes and eight tie scores throughout the contest.
Goforth and senior Courtni Gibson combined to make five of six free throw attempts in the final 12 seconds to seal the win for the Blossoms.
In addition to Goforth's game-highs in points and rebounds, Mullen finished with 17 points and nine boards.
The Blossoms finished at 39 percent shooting from the field (23-for-59), 41 percent on three-pointers (7-for-17) and 68 percent on foul shots (15-for-22). PSC ended the game at 36 percent from the field (22-for-61), 32 percent on treys (6-for-19) and 67 percent on foul shots (14-for-21).
Leonard led the Lady Panthers with 24 points. Chaney followed with 19.
Following the holiday break, the Blossoms return to action on January 2 at home against Crowley's Ridge College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
