MONTICELLO – Senior Cameron Blue matched a season high in points and set a new career high in rebounds to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team to a 78-62 non-conference win over Ecclesia College at home on Tuesday night.
Blue finished the game 9-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 on three-pointers and 3-for-4 on foul shots for his second 23-game performance of the season, the last coming against Champion Baptist in the season opener. The Pflugerville, Texas native also finished with 13 rebounds and three blocked shots in the win. It was his first double-double of the season.
The Weevils (7-13) opened the game on an 8-0 run through the first four minutes and stretched their lead to double-digits by the 15:25 mark of the opening period.
The Royals (8-14) cut their deficit down to five points at the 4:24 mark, but UAM responded with a 12-3 run to end the half and take a 14-point lead of 37-23 into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, UAM jumped out to a 21-point lead less than three minutes in following a 13-4 run to start the period. The Weevils led by as much as 26 points in the second half on a made jumper by Blue at the 5:17 mark.
The Weevils finished the game at 49 percent from the field (31-for-63) and 77 percent on foul shots (13-for-17), the team's third highest free throw percentage of the year.
In addition to Blue's game-high 23 points, junior Richard Benedyth added 16 points, three assists and four steals. Senior Sharif Hudson finished one rebound away from a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Hudson also turned in a team-high four assists.
Ecclesia was led by Jarvis Green with 12 points and seven rebounds.
UAM returns to action on Thursday at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
