WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team began its road trip in western Oklahoma with a 69-54 setback to Southwestern Oklahoma State Thursday night inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
SWOSU (9-14, 6-11 Great American Conference) made the first and second of its eight three pointers in the first minute of the game and jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 17:28 mark to force a UAM timeout.
The Blossoms (12-10, 10-7 GAC) regrouped with five new faces and trimmed the deficit down to four points five minutes later on a made jumper by sophomore Vivanna Carter. UAM got as close as two points at the third media timeout of the first half with a pair of free throws from junior Tamia Grady. However, SWOSU went to the three-ball once again, sinking three unanswered treys during a four minute scoring drought for UAM, which gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the half at 11.
SWOSU grabbed a double-digit lead at the 17:03 mark of the second half and maintained that advantage throughout the remainder of the contest.
UAM finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field (21-for-57). Junior Jordan Goforth was UAM's only double-digit scorer with 13 points, while also chipping in a team-best eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs finished at 46 percent from the field (25-for-55). Three of SWOSU's starting five reached double-digits in scoring, led by Korina Chapman with 17 points. Jessica Penner added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blossoms are back in action on Saturday at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. in Alva.
