WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma – Junior left fielder Kali Piha had a combined six hits and seven runs batted in to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team to a pair of Great American Conference road victories over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday by scores of 8-7 and 6-4.
Piha went 2-for-3 in the first game, including a grand slam homerun in the top of the third inning. The Bentonville, Arkansas native followed up with a 4-for-4 outing at the plate in the second game with three RBI. She also had a pair of assists in the second half of the double, gunning down a runner at the plate in the third inning and ending the game by throwing out a runner at third base trying to stretch a double into a triple.
The Blossoms (8-3, 2-0 GAC) needed a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning of game two to record the double header sweep, and got just that, plating four runs with two outs on the board, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Kelli Halder and RBI singles from sophomore McKenzie Rice and Piha.
SWOSU (4-9, 0-2 GAC) got a two-run double from Tori Hawk in the bottom of the sixth to break a two-all tie, which was established after one inning.
Piha opened the scoring in game two with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning following a SWOSU error that should have ended the inning. The Bulldogs answered on a two-run homerun by Adrienne Martinez in the bottom half of the frame.
In the first game, Piha's grand slam highlighted UAM's five-run fifth inning, which also included a solo homerun from senior Sydney Tipton.
Junior pitcher Katherine Batey helped her own cause with a solo homerun in the second for UAM's first GAC run of the 2015 season.
The Blossoms finalized their scoring by getting a run off a passed ball in the fifth and an RBI single by junior Holly WIlmarth in the sixth.
SWOSU rallied in the bottom of the seventh with four runs, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Maci Brown, but UAM sophomore McKenzie Ashby came in for her first save of the year to end the threat.
Batey (4-2) earned the win in the first game, and senior Katie Slaughter (3-1) picked up the win in the second game in complete-game fashion.
The two squads wrap up the four-game series on Saturday at noon at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
