ALVA, Oklahoma – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team outscored Northwestern Oklahoma State in the second half, but a 25-point deficit at halftime was too much to overcome, as the Weevils fell to the Rangers by a final score of 105-82 on Saturday.
The Weevils (7-16, 3-15 Great American Conference) led the first seven minutes of the first half, including their largest lead of six on a jumper from junior Richard Benedyth at the 15:21 mark.
The Rangers (9-17, 8-11 GAC) posted a 14-2 run starting at the 11:46 mark of the first half and going through the 8:41 mark to give NWOSU an eight-point lead. NWOSU maintained its lead for the remainder of the game from that point.
UAM finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field (29-for-70). Benedyth and junior Jamal Peterson tied for the team-high with 21 points each. Seniors Sharif Hudson and D'Audrio Patton added 19 and 11 points, respectively.
NWOSU finished at 51 percent overall (38-for-74). The Rangers got the majority of their points from four of their starting five reaching double-figures. Darrian Dempsey scored a game-high 24 points. T'Aries Taylor finished right behind him with 23 points.
The Weevils are back in action on Thursday, February 26 with the final road trip of the season to face off against GAC rival Southern Arkansas. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Magnolia.
