MAGNOLIA, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team lost to Southern Arkansas 105-85 on Thursday night in the team's final road game of the 2014-15 season.
Southern Arkansas used a 9-0 run late in the first half to get on top by double-digits. Prior to that run, there were six lead changes and three tie scores with neither team leading by more than five points.
UAM held the lead on three occasions in the first period, all three giving the Weevils a one-point lead, which ended up being the team's largest lead of the game.
After trailing by 14 points at halftime, UAM cut that deficit in half by the 15:51 mark of the second half. SAU later responded with a 9-0 scoring run to re-establish a double-digit lead, which was held throughout the remainder of the contest.
The Weevils finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field (30-for-70). Four of UAM's five starters finished in double-digits in the points category, led by junior Richard Benedyth with 20 points. Senior Sharif Hudson added 19, while junior Jamal Peterson and senior Eli Alexander chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
SAU shot 58 percent from the field (36-for-63). Chauncy Williams led all scorers with 24 points.
The Weevils close out the season on Saturday at home against Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Steelman Field House. There will be a Senior Day ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the women's game.
