MONTICELLO –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team left 12 runners on base and only scored on a two-base wild pitch in a 2-1 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Friday in the first of three Great American Conference games this weekend at Weevils Field.

The Weevils (4-5, 1-3 GAC) had 12 opportunities with runners in scoring position during Friday's loss, but only managed one hit during those chances.

That hit, a single to center from junior Travis Steinke in the fourth, wasn't deep enough into center field to score junior Nick Cerda from second base. Steinke's single loaded the bases with one out, but a pair of infield popups ended the rally.

NWOSU (7-7, 2-5 GAC) opened the scoring with a two-out RBI double from Tito Montano in the top of the second inning. The Rangers added what ended up being the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Jeff Martin.

UAM's only run came in the bottom of the eight, when sophomore Lathan McFadden, a pinch runner scored from second base on a wild pitch the NWOSU catcher could not locate.

The Weevils totaled five hits in the loss, two coming from junior Corey Wood.

Junior Zach McKnight (1-1) took the loss after giving up both runs off six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in the first seven innings.

NWOSU's Matthew Bickford (3-2) earned the win, keeping UAM scoreless on three hits in the first six innings.

The three-game series wraps up on Saturday with a double header starting at noon.
