GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello concluded its participation in the QuikTrip Classic on Sunday with a 10-8 loss to Nebraska Kearney.
The Weevils (3-1) were limited to just five hits in the loss, but crossed the plate eight times, highlighted by a three-run homerun by senior Bronson Gillam in the top of the eighth inning to cut the deficit down to run. The Lopers (4-3) added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
UAM rallied once again in the ninth, getting an RBI double from junior Mitchell Dornblut to score junior Nick Cerda, who singled off the outstretched glove of the UNK third baseman to lead off the inning. However, the Lopers sat down the next three Weevils to end the threat and give UAM its first loss of the season.
The Lopers started the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning off three hits. UAM answered with two unearned runs in the top half of the third to force a 2-all tie.
A three-run homerun by UNK's Connor Messinger in the bottom of the third gave UNK a 6-2 lead after the Lopers scored a run off a wild pitch earlier in the inning. That homerun was UNK's only hit of the four-run inning. Three Lopers hitters reached base via walk.
UAM was next to score on a sacrifice fly from junior Travis Steinke in the top of the sixth to score freshman Brian Ray, who walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third.
True freshman Braden Chambers (0-1) took the loss in his UAM debut, giving up six runs off four hits with three walks in the first three innings.
The Lopers were led by Messinger, who finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with four runs batted in. Anthony Pacheco also had two hits for the UNK.
UAM had two triples in the loss, moving the overall total up five to start the season, two more than the Weevils had all of last season.
The Weevils begin an 11-game home stand this Wednesday against Delta State in a single non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Weevils Field.
