CONWAY, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team recorded its seventh and eighth straight victories with a pair of come-from-behind one-run wins over Delta State on Wednesday at UCA's Farris Field.
The Blossoms (14-3) won the first game 6-5 and took the nightcap 8-7.
In the first game, the Lady Statesmen (9-8) took an early 2-0 lead, but that was erased with a four-run third inning for the Blossoms, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Holly Wilmarth.
DSU plated two runs in the top of the fourth to force a 4-all tie before the Blossoms regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back run-producing doubles from Wilmarth and junior Kali Piha.
The Lady Statesmen cut their deficit in half with one run in the top of the seventh to finalize the scoring.
Senior Katie Slaughter (6-1) earned the win in complete-game fashion, surrendering five runs off 10 hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
The second game featured an early back-and-forth battle, including a five-run second inning for Delta State. UAM scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the third and the go-ahead two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Blossoms went into double-digits in hits for the eighth time this season with 12 in the second win over the Lady Statesmen. Four UAM players posted at least two hits in the win, including freshman Skyler Anderson with a 3-for-4 performance. Wilmarth, Tipton and senior Lacy Blanchard all posted two hits in the win.
Sophomore McKenzie Ashby (4-0) kept her perfect record intact by recording the complete-game win. She allowed seven runs (three earned) off 13 hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
UAM is back in action this weekend at Arkansas Tech for a four-game Great American Conference series.
