MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split a Great American Conference double-header with league-leading Ouachita Baptist on Monday at home, losing the first game 10-7 in 10 innings before winning the nightcap 4-3 in walk-off style.
The Weevils (10-8, 7-6 GAC) salvaged a win in the twin bill with a two-run homerun from senior Bronson Gillam in the bottom of the sixth and a game-winning bases-loaded single from junior Travis Steinke in the seventh.
Steinke was responsible for UAM's first run of the second game, collecting an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to cut the OBU lead down to 3-1. He and Gillam both had two hits in the win.
The Tigers (11-9, 7-3 GAC) scored one run in each of the first three innings to take an early lead.
Senior Austin Braddock (5-1) earned the win in complete-game fashion, giving up three runs off seven hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. It was the first time in his UAM career to reach double-digit strikeouts in a singe game.
In the first game, the Weevils rallied from behind on three different occasions to force extra inning, but the Tigers plated four runs in the top half of the 10th inning to earn the win.
UAM started the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI double by junior Corey Wood, created a 2-all tie in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Gillam and forced another tie on a two-run homerun by junior Kevin Fitzpatrick in the sixth.
Down 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Weevils chipped away with single runs in the seventh and the eighth to force the fourth tie score of the game. Junior Nick Cerda hit an RBI single in the seventh, and Wood added his second RBI of the game in the eighth with a single to right center.
OBU took advantage of three hits and two UAM errors to score its four go-ahead runs in the 10th. UAM finalized the scoring in the bottom of the frame on a two-out solo homerun from redshirt freshman Brian Ray.
The Weevils and Tigers meet again on Tuesday, this time in Arkadelphia for a single non-conference game. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Rab Rogers Field.
