STATESMEN RALLY TO BEAT @WEEVILSBASEBALL

Box Score (HTML)

CLEVELAND, Mississippi –
Delta State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for an 8-7 win over the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team Tuesday night at Ferris Field.

Trailing 3-0 after the first three innings, the Weevils (12-11) put crooked numbers up in each of the middle innings to hold a 7-5 lead going into the seventh inning. DSU went station-to-station in the eighth inning to plate three runs off three hits.

The Statesmen (10-11) struck first on a three-run homerun in the bottom of the third. UAM answered in the top of the fourth with RBI singles from senior Bronson Gillam, junior Nick Cerda and junior Mitchell Dornblut.

DSU responded by taking the lead once again with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off two hits and a UAM error. The Weevils kept the Statesmen from extending their lead further by getting out of a bases-loaded jam with only the two runs allowed.

The Weevils rallied for two runs in the fifth to force a 5-all tie, using an RBI double by junior Kevin Fitzpatrick and an RBI single by junior Corey Wood. UAM took its 7-5 lead in the sixth with two runs off two hits and a DSU error.

UAM ended up with 11 hits in the loss, led by redshirt freshman Brian Ray, Gillam and Dornblut with two hits each.

The Weevils are back in action this weekend at Harding for a three-game Great American Conference series starting on Friday with a single game at 2 p.m.
