WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team scored at least one run in each of the last four innings and held Southwestern Oklahoma State University scoreless in the same period to record an 10-4 come-from-behind victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday in the series finale.
With Sunday's win, the Weevils (7-7, 4-5 Great American Conference) picked up its first series win of the 2015 season two games to one over the Bulldogs (8-12, 5-7 GAC).
While UAM was plating runs in the last four innings, junior Ben Aldridge (1-0) came out of the bullpen and shut down the Bulldogs, giving up no runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the final four frames. It was the second time of the season Aldridge has gone four innings in relief, the last coming in a win over then ranked No. 6 Southern Arkansas at the QuikTrip Classic.
Aldridge relieved junior Gavin Johnston, gave up four runs (three earned) off five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in his no decision.
After being held scoreless in the first five innings on just two hits, the Weevils went to the long ball for their first runs of the game. Juniors Travis Steinke and Nick Cerda hit back-to-back homeruns in the inning, Steinke being of the two-run variety, to trim SWOSU's lead to 4-3.
In the seventh, Steinke collected another RBI on a groundout to score redshirt freshman Brian Ray, who led off the inning with a walk.
The Weevils took the lead in the eighth with four runs off four hits, including a two-run single from Ray, a sacrifice fly from junior Corey Wood and an RBI double by senior Bronson Gillam.
In the ninth, UAM took advantage of a two-out error committed by the Bulldogs to add the final two runs of the game, highlighted by an RBI double by junior Kevin Fitzpatrick.
Brian Ray finished the game with a career-high three hits in five at bats.
UAM is back in action this Tuesday at home against Lyon College for a non-conference double-header starting at noon.
