MONTICELLO – This University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened a three-game Great American Conference series against Southeastern Oklahoma State with a 10-3 victory on Sunday at home on Senior Day.
The Weevils (15-16, 11-12 GAC) eclipsed the double-digit mark in hits for the ninth time of the season, this time getting 13 to tie the second-highest total of the year.
Junior starter Zach McKnight (5-3) went the distance for UAM, giving up three runs off eight hits and also tying his career-high of nine strikeouts. From the middle of the sixth through the first of the ninth, the Bentonville, Arkansas native retired nine straight batters, highlighted by striking out the side in the seventh.
UAM spread its runs out over three innings, starting with two in the second on a sacrifice fly from junior Mitchell Dornblut and scoring off a Southeastern wild pitch.
In the third, UAM plated six runs off six hits and sent 11 batters to the plate during the rally. Redshirt freshman Brian Ray got things going with a line-drive solo homerun to right center, followed by RBI singles from senior Bronson Gillam and junior Nick Cerda. Sophomore Alex Smith followed up with a two-run single before junior Kevin Fitzpatrick capped the rally with an RBI groundout.
Fitzpatrick was responsible for both of UAM's final runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. He started the rally with an RBI single, then advanced two bases to third on a errant pickoff throw from the Southeastern pitcher. As he was coming into third base, the throw from the SE first baseman got away from the third baseman, which gave enough room for the speedy Fitzpatrick to score and go three bases on two errors in the same play.
The Savage Storm (14-21, 10-10 GAC) opened the scoring with one run in the first and closed the scoring by sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the ninth and getting two runs out of the rally.
UAM had five players with at least two hits in the win, led by Nick Cerda's 3-for-4 outing. Junior Travis Steinke, junior Corey Wood, Gillam and Smith all had two hits in the victory.
UAM honored its four seniors before Sunday's first pitch. Austin Braddock, Logan Johnson, Jeff Harvill and Bronson Gillam are all participating in their final home games at UAM this weekend.
The Weevils and Savage Storm are scheduled to play a double-header on Monday starting at noon at Weevils Field. Follow @UAMsports on Twitter and check UAMsports.com for schedule updates.
