MONTICELLO – University of Arkansas at Monticello junior softball player Holly Wilmarth had homeruns in each game of a double-header split with Southern Arkansas at home on Tuesday. The Blossoms won the first game 4-1 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Blossoms (18-15, 10-12 Great American Conference) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI doubles from sophomore McKenzie Rice and senior Lacy Blanchard.
In the third, Wilmarth hit her first homerun of the day, this one a solo shot to straightaway center field to put UAM up 3-0. UAM got up 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from sophomore Korie Parker.Â
Senior starting pitcher Katie Slaughter (10-6) earned the decision in both games. She sat down the Lady Muleriders (19-18, 11-14 GAC) in order throughout the first four innings before allowing her first base runner in the top of the fifth. She did not allow a hit until the sixth. In the second game, she came in relief and allowed the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
The Blossoms again jumped out to a quick lead in game two on Wilmarth's second round-tripper, this time a two-run shot over the left field fence. It was her team-high eighth homerun of the season.
Following that homerun, SAU starter Chancy Williams (5-7) held UAM scoreless on four hits in the final six innings. SAU scored one in the third on a solo homerun by Chelsea Ivy and forced a 2-all tie in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Audrey Farfan gave SAU its eventual game-winning run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.
UAM is back in action this weekend on the road against Southern Nazarene in a four-game GAC series.
