SCHULZ LEADS @UAMVOLLEYBALL IN SEASON-OPENING LOSS

DENTON, Texas — Senior Sydni Schulz accounted for 11 points to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team in a three-set loss to Texas Woman's University in the 2015 season opener.

Schulz ended the match with nine kills, 11 digs and two service aces, and posted a team-high .219 hitting percentage with only two errors on 32 swings. Junior Kedra Johnson followed with seven kills and four block assists, while junior Carolina Gasparini and sophomore Aubrey Harrison each posted five kills.

Final game scores in the loss to TWU (1-0) were 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19. The Blossoms (0-1) play again Friday night against Texas A&M-Commerce. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at the TWU Hilton Garden Inn Classic. Live stats will be available at www.UAMsports.com/coverage.aspx.

In Friday afternoon's season opener, the Blossoms held early leads in each of the first two sets, before giving up big point swings to the Pioneers to fall behind two sets to none.

UAM opened the match by scoring the first four points and later scored four straight points again to hold a 12-7 lead. UAM led all the way up to 18-17 before the Pioneers took the set by winning seven of the final 10 rallies.

In the second set, the Pioneers held UAM at six points for eight consecutive rallies to grow a seven-point advantage. The closest UAM came throughout the rest of the set was six points on three different occasions.

The Pioneers held the lead for all of the final set, despite UAM cutting an early deficit down to just one point on a block from junior Kya Standford and Kedra Johnson to make it 17-16 in favor of TWU. That came after five straight UAM points, including two kills by Schulz.
