DENTON, Texas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team repeated its opening day performance by splitting a pair of matches on Saturday in the final day of the Texas Woman's Hilton Garden Inn Classic. The Blossoms started the day with a three-set loss to Cameron before bouncing back in the afternoon with a five-set win over Texas A&M-International.
In the afternoon match against A&M-International (0-4), the Blossoms (2-2) dominated the first, fourth and fifth sets by hitting .265 in the first, .283 in the fourth and .312 in the fifth. UAM had zero errors in the fifth and deciding set.
Junior Carolina Gasparini totaled 19 kills in the win over A&M-International, the highest total for a UAM player since October 8, 2013. She also turned in 16 digs for her second double-double of the season. Senior Sydni Shulz also picked up her second double-double of the year with 13 kills and 18 digs.
Defensively, senior Lani Kaiwi led the way with 20 digs, just the third time in her UAM career to reach the 20+ dig mark in a match. Schulz added 18, and senior Kaila Kikugawa had 17. Junior Alissya Theis paced the UAM offense with 30 assists.
In the morning loss to Cameron (3-0), the Blossoms committed 25 errors on totaled 26 kills for a hitting percentage just above zero. On the other side of the net, the Aggies had 39 kills and only 11 errors on 106 swings for a .264 percentage. Gasparini and junior Kya Standford led the Blossoms with six kills each.
UAM is back in action on Tuesday on the road against UAPB. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Pine Bluff.
