SHAWNEE, OKLA. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team took down Great American Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist University Friday evening with a five-set victory over the Bison on the road.
Final game scores from the match were 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, and 15-9.
UAM (8-12, 4-4 GAC) controlled the opening set early as the Blossoms began the match against the Bison on a 7-1 run and took set number one 25-20, never trailing Oklahoma Baptist (13-9, 7-2) throughout. Roles reversed in the second set as OBU never trailed Arkansas-Monticello and the home team went on to even the match up at 1-1 with a 25-22 set win. Despite a closely contested battle in the beginning of set three, UAM took the match lead at 2-1 after a set clinching kill by Kya Standford.
Arkansas-Monticello surrendered a 6-3 run to the Bison midway through set four and could not recover as OBU claimed the fourth set, 25-22. UAM never lost momentum however as the Blossoms closed out the fifth and final set going on a 7-2 run to claim victory in the match over the Bison.
Junior Shay Mitchell led the UAM offensive attack on the night with 16 overall kills on 44 total attacks for a .227 hitting percentage. Senior Carolina Gasparini recorded a double-double in the match-up with 15 kills and 20 total digs as well. Gasparini added a match-high four service aces to her stat-line also.
Freshman setter Kendall Vondra led the Blossoms in assists as she recorded a career-high 57 assists in the match and also totaled 15 digs.
Junior Macy Mitchell tallied a match-high 21 digs and freshman Maggie Pyles contributed a career-high 14 kills in the contest also.
The Blossoms will hit the court again tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, as UAM travels to Bethany, Oklahoma to face Southern Nazarene University with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
