MONTICELLO - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team took down Great American Conference foe Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday night with a four-set victory over the Bulldogs at home.
Final game scores from the match were 25-14, 26-24, 20-25 and 25-21.
The Blossoms (6-12, 2-4 GAC) began the match with strong play all around as UAM never trailed in the opening set. The following set contained multiple lead changes with each team leading by one or two points in various parts of the set, however two straight errors by Southwestern Oklahoma State (4-12, 2-4 GAC) allowed Arkansas-Monticello to gain a two set lead in the match. SWOSU jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in set number three and maintained a lead throughout the remainder of the set, despite UAM cutting the lead down to only three points.
Set number four continued to be a closely contested battle between the two programs as the lead changed hands multiple times. The Blossoms fought back late in the set however and went on a 5-0 run to ultimately claim victory in the set at 25-21 and in the match at 3-1.
Senior Carolina Gasparini anchored the UAM offense on the night with a career-high 20 kills on 61 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .279. Gasparini added six digs, two block assists, and two service aces to her stat-line as well.
Shay Mitchell and Kya Standford each finished the evening with double digit kills as well with Mitchell totaling 12 and Standford adding 10.
Macy Mitchell tallied a career-high 32 overall digs in the contest and added one service ace also.
Freshman setter Kendall Vondra led the Blossoms in assists as she totaled 46 in the match and also totaled three service aces and nine digs, and Elizabeth Harshaw provided a solid match overall with 18 digs.
UAM will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 8 to host Northwestern Oklahoma State in a GAC match-up inside Steelman Field House with first serve set for 12 p.m.
