MAGNOLIA, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team lost to Southern Arkansas on the road Monday night by a final score of 65-47.
The Blossoms (11-11, 8-10 Great American Conference) held a 12-10 lead after the first period, but were outscored 20-7 in the second period to create a hole that ended up being too big to dig out of.
SAU (15-7, 11-7 GAC) used a 7-0 run midway through the second period to pull away. UAM cut its deficit down to four points early in the third period following a 7-0 run of its own, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Ayesha Wahid.
The Muleriders went used a pair of three-pointers early in the fourth period to build a double-digit lead, which they maintained throughout the remainder of regulation.
UAM finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field (21-for-59), 20 percent on three-pointers (4-for-20) and 25 percent at the foul line (1-for-4). Freshman Mia Hayes led UAM with 14 points, followed by Wahid and senior Jordan Goforth with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Wahid led both teams in rebounding with nine.
SAU finished at 43 percent overall (24-for-56), 45 percent on three-pointers (9-for-20) and 50 percent on foul shots (8-for-16). SAU's Shana Holmes led all scorers with 16 points.
The Blossoms wrap up a three-game road swing this Thursday night against Ouachita. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. in Arkadelphia.
