MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team lost to Ouachita Baptist on Thursday night by a final score of 69-66 in the final road game of the 2015-16 regular season.
The Blossoms (11-12, 8-11 Great American Conference) jumped out to an early lead with the first six points, and extended their lead to double-digits three minutes into the game following a 14-2 run. That 12-point lead was UAM's largest of the contest.
Ouachita (9-16, 6-13 GAC) began chipping away, and used a 17-7 run that extended into the second period to trim UAM's lead down to two points with 8:42 remaining before halftime.
The Tigers took their first lead at the 6:05 mark of the second period, but both squads went back and forth from there to force a 34-all deadlock at the break.
Ouachita the majority of the third period, and used a 13-4 scoring run over three and a half minutes to get up by seven points midway through.
UAM rallied to regain the lead midway through the fourth period following a 15-3 run that featured three-pointers from senior Nikki Mullen and freshman Ayesha Wahid, and two layups from sophomore Cheridan Burroughs. However, the Tigers closed the final two minutes of the game outscoring UAM 7-2 to seal the win.
UAM finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field (26-for-59), 38 percent on three-pointers (6-for-16) and 80 percent on foul shots (8-for-10). Freshman Mia Hayes led the Blossoms with a new career-high of 20 points. Senior Jordan Goforth added 14 points, and sophomore Taylor Collins finished with 12.
Ouachita shot over 50 percent from the field in the fourth period, which pushed the Tigers up to 42 percent overall for the game (24-for-57). OBU's Breanna Harris led all scorers with 21 points.
The Blossoms begin a three-game home stand to close out the regular season this Saturday at home against 14th-ranked Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
