@WEEVILSBASEBALL EDGES UNION IN PRE-GAC TUNE-UP

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team wrapped up a five-game home stand with a 5-4 non-conference win over Union on Wednesday at Weevils Field.

The Weevils (4-4) are now set for their first Great American Conference series of the season this weekend on the road against Southern Nazarene, starting with a single nine-inning game on Friday, February 19 at 1 p.m.

In the win over Union (6-2), UAM scored four runs in the first and one run in the second, while the Bulldogs put up one in the first and three in the second. Both pitching staffs threw up zeros on the scoreboard for the final seven innings.

UAM hit through the lineup in the bottom of the first inning to score four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from senior catcher Travis Steinke. Seniors Corey Wood and Kevin Fitzpatrick also had run producing at bats in the inning.

The Bulldogs took advantage of three consecutive walks to put runners into scoring position in the top of the second. An RBI groundout by Tyler Mauzy and a two-run single from Ryne Roper forced a four-all tie in the second.
 
Sophomore Brian Ray put UAM on top by its final margin with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the second, scoring Fitzpatrick, who had a bunt single and stole second earlier in the inning.
 
UAM reached second base only once more throughout the rest of the game. Union had scoring opportunities in the fifth and eighth innings, but was unable to push anything across.
 
Fitzpatrick accounted for three of UAM's six total hits with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
 
Union finished with seven hits, led by two-hit performances from Ryne Roper and Zach Phillips.
 
Sophomore Braden Chambers (2-0) earned the win for UAM after giving up four runs off five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in the first six innings. Sophomore Dawson Moser earned his third save of the year, striking out two and only allowing one Union base runner in the top of the ninth. Senior relivers Gavin Johnston and Ben Aldridge were successful in holding the UAM lead with only one combined hit allowed in the seventh and eighth innings.
