MONTICELLO – Southern Nazarene shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to beat the University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team 62-45 on Thursday night inside Steelman Field House.
The Crimson Storm (13-14, 12-9 Great American Conference) ended up outscoring UAM 38-21 in the final 20 minutes. The Weevils (7-20, 5-16 GAC) shot just under 30 percent in the second half.
SNU grabbed the lead in the first minute of the first half and never trailed throughout the remainder of the period, despite the Weevils forcing four tie scores. SNU led by as much as nine in the first half, but the Weevils immediately responded with a 9-0 run to force an 18-all tie with 6:33 remaining before halftime.
The two squads exchanged baskets in the final six minutes to keep the score deadlocked, 24-all, at the break.
In the second half, UAM grabbed its first lead since the first minute of the first half on a three-pointer by senior Jamal Peterson at the 12:44 mark. That put UAM up 35-34. However, the Storm responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a double-digit lead. SNU later used a 12-3 run to close the game and seal the win.
UAM finished the game shooting 33 percent overall (17-for-51), 24 percent on three-pointers (4-for-17) and 58 percent on foul shots (7-for-12). SNU shot 42 percent overall (22-for-52), 38 percent on treys (8-for-21) and 83 percent at the foul line (10-for-12).
Junior Vicktor Arnick was the only Weevil to reach double-digits in points with a game-high 15. SNU was led by Francisco Hukill's double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Weevils close the 2015-16 season this Saturday at home against Oklahoma Baptist. Tipoff is 3 p.m. at Steelman Field House. UAM will honor its six seniors prior to the start of the game.
