@WEEVILSBASEBALL OUT-SLUGS CHOCTAWS

CLINTON, Mississippi — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team had six extra base hits, including three homeruns, to highlight an 8-6 road win over Mississippi College on Tuesday.

Seniors Travis Steinke and Corey Wood, and sophomore Brian Ray, all hit homeruns for the Weevils (12-7). Wood, senior Nick Cerda and senior C.J. Womack all added doubles as well.

Both teams totaled 13 hits in the contest. The Choctaws (7-11) got out to an early lead with one run in the first and three more in the second after UAM took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a two-run homerun from Steinke.

In the third, UAM forced a 4-all tie on a pair of solo homeruns, the first coming in leadoff fashion from Ray, and the second coming from Wood two batters later.

UAM took advantage of a pair of MC errors in the top of the fourth for another two runs to put the Weevils up 6-4. In the fifth, UAM took a 7-4 lead on an RBI single from senior Mitchell Dornblut, who ended the game with a team-high three hits.

The Choctaws were next with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in consecutive at bats on a sac fly and a run-scoring single.

The Weevils added a cushion with one run in the top of the eighth on a squeeze bunt from senior Kevin Fitzpatrick.

Senior Gavin Johnston (1-0) earned his first win of the year, allowing two runs off five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 3.2 innings of relief. Sophomore Dawson Moser picked up his fifth save of the year after keeping the Choctaws scoreless in the ninth.

Senior relievers Kregg Snook and Chad Bradford held the lead for the Weevils by keeping the Choctaws scoreless in the end of the seventh inning and the eighth as well.

UAM is scheduled to return to action this weekend at home in a three-game Great American Conference series against Southwestern Oklahoma State. More information about that series, including any possible changes due to weather, will be released later this week.
