MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team completed a three-game Great American Conference sweep over East Central with two wins on Saturday in historic fashion.
Junior first baseman Guy Halbert set a new UAM and GAC single-game record with four doubles to lead the Weevils (26-11, 17-7 GAC) to an 8-2 win over the Tigers (14-24, 13-14 GAC) in the first game of Saturday's double-header.
In the second game, senior right fielder Corey Wood became UAM's new single-season home run champion with his 15th of the year to highlight a 5-0 win in the finale.
The series finale win marked UAM's third GAC series sweep of the season and also gave head coach John Harvey his 300th career victory. Harvey is now 300-268 in 12 seasons as a head coach, six at Henderson State University and six at UAM. Harvey is the second all-time winningest coach at UAM with a record 146-120 since taking over prior to the 2011 season.
The Weevils have also clinched a GAC Championship Tournament berth while moving into sole possession of first place in the conference by only four one-thousandths of a percentage point.
In the first game, all but one of UAM's eight runs came in the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate during the rally that featured seven runs off eight hits.
UAM blasted 15 hits in the win, led by Halbert's record-breaking 4-for-4 performance. Senior Evan Comeau went 3-for-5. Junior Nick Piraino with 3-for-4.
Sophomore Braden Chambers (8-0) kept his unbeaten record intact by allowing two runs off three hits with four strikeouts in the first six innings. Seniors Kregg Snook and Gavin Johnston combined for three scoreless innings of relief, both facing the minimum number of batters.
In the finale, UAM scored one in the second off an RBI single from Piraino and one in the fourth on an RBI double from junior Alex Smith to hold a 2-0 lead through four innings.
Wood belted his 15th round-tripper of the year with two outs in the fifth inning with a no-doubter over the right field wall at Weevils Field.
Sophomore Brian Ray finalized the scoring with a two-run home run, also to right field, in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior Grant Black (3-4) earned a complete-game shutout victory, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks in seven innings of work.
UAM is on the road for its next four games, starting this Tuesday in Searcy in a non-conference matchup with Harding. UAM will face off against second-place Southeastern Oklahoma State next weekend in Durant. More information about that series will be released later in the week.
