MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split a non-conference double-header against No. 23 Delta State on Tuesday at Blossoms Field, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second game 3-2.
Down 3-0 late in the first game, the Blossoms (23-19) rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double from senior left fielder Kali Piha followed by a two-run homerun from junior third baseman McKenzie Rice.
After giving up a two-run homerun in the first inning and a solo homerun in the second, UAM junior starter Kendra Coleman (11-9) only allowed the Lady Statesmen (31-11) to reach second base once in the final five innings. She ended the game with three runs allowed on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in her 15th complete game of the season.
Rice and sophomore second baseman Skyler Anderson accounted for half of UAM's eight total hits in the win. Rice was 2-for-3. Anderson was 2-for-2.
In the second game, DSU again scored early with one run in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The Blossoms finalized the scoring on a two-run, opposite-field homerun by freshman Kali Bolter in the bottom of the fourth inning.
UAM had seven total hits in the loss. Piha was the only Blossom to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
Senior reliever Elizabeth Delafield retired the final 13 DSU batters in a row.
The Blossoms open a 10-game road swing this weekend in a four-game Great American Conference series against Harding.
