MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team continued its winning ways Thursday night with an 84-78 Great American Conference victory over the Bisons of Harding University inside Steelman Field House.
The Weevils (11-0, 7-0 GAC) came out firing in this contest against Harding University (7-4, 4-3 GAC) as UAM led 20-7 within the first eight minutes of play in the opening half. Arkansas-Monticello controlled much of the pace throughout the second half in this match-up until the Bisons slowly began to knock down shots and close the gap with a 21-9 run over six minutes late in the half. UAM however held off the late run of HU and sealed its 11th straight victory, 84-78.
Offensivley Arkanas-Monticello was led by junior Derylton Hill with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Hill was able to bring down five rebounds on the night as well. Four other Weevils recorded double digit scoring performances as Tyrin Jones (16), Vicktor Arnick (14), Cobe Goosby (13), and Karim Mawuenyega (12) all finished in double figures.
Goosby provided solid play all around as he tallied his second double-double on the year with 10 total rebounds in the contest, and added seven assists. Mawuenyega also contributed solid overall play on both ends of the floor with seven overall boards and dished out seven assists as well.
Arkansas-Monticello finished the match-up shooting 56 percent from the field (32-for-57), 23 percent on three's (3-for-13) and 65 percent on foul shots (17-for-26). HU ended the game at 43 percent from the field (26-for-61), 32 percent on three-pointers (7-for-22) and 76 percent from the free throw line (19-for-25).
UAM will be back in action next on Saturday, January 14 as the Weevils will take on GAC opponent Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
