Arkadelphia, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team defeated Great American Conference opponent Henderson State Saturday afternoon on the road by a final score of 70-68.
UAM (6-6, 3-5 GAC) powered ahead of the Reddies of Henderson State (6-8, 6-2 GAC) in the opening half of play, leading HSU 40-34. Henderson State however came out firing in the second half as both teams traded lead changes and found each other tied multiple times. Each squad battled close with just seconds left in the fourth quarter as UAM held possession of the ball with just 00:30 seconds remaining as Treasure Evans knocked down the game winning shot just inside the top of the key for the 70-68 victory over the number two team in the GAC.
Senior Nelsha Peterson guided the Arkansas-Monticello offensive unit with 18 total points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field. Peterson was able to pull down five rebounds on the day as well. Several other Blossoms finished the contest in double figures which included Treasure Evans (11), Taylor Collins (11), and Ayesha Wahid (10).
Junior Brittnee Broadway led the Blossoms in overall rebounding with seven total, and Evans led the team in assists with two overall, and added two steals to her stat-line.
Final team statistics on the day for Arkansas-Monticello included shooting 47 percent from the field (29-for-62), 27 percent on three-pointers (4-for-15) and 50 percent on free throws (8-for-16). The Reddies finished the match-up at 35 percent from the field (22-for-62), 35 percent beyond the arc (8-for-23) and 70 percent on foul shots (16-for-23).
The Blossoms return to the court next on Monday, January 16 as UAM will travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to face GAC opponent Southern Arkansas with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
