Magnolia, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team continued its winning ways Monday night against Great American Conference Rival Southern Arkansas on the road by a final score of 96-87.
UAM (13-0, 9-0 GAC) was locked in an intense battle with rival Southern Arkansas (6-9, 4-5 GAC) as each of these teams traded buckets throughout the opening half on a consistent basis. The Weevils were able to pull away to hold a 48-41 lead at the half, but the Muleriders would not go away so easily in the upcoming half. It was not until midway through the second half that UAM truly began to build a solid double digit lead, after a layup by Tyrin Jones put Arkansas-Monticello up 69-58. The Weevils continued its high rate of play throughout the remainder of the half to solidify its 13th straight victory overall, defeating SAU 96-87.
Arkansas-Monticello was led on offense by junior Karim Mawuenyega with 20 total points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Mawuenyega added four assists, four steals, and three rebounds to his stat line as well.
Four other Weevils finished the night in double figures as well including Tyrin Jones, Derylton Hill, and Vicktor Arnick all with 17 points a piece, and Cobe Goosby went on to total 16 in the match-up. Hill went on to record his third double-double of the season by grabbing 15 total rebounds in the game and Goosby dished out four assists also.
The Weevils finished the match-up shooting 49 percent from the field (29-for-59), 67 percent on three's (8-for-12) and 77 percent on foul shots (30-for-39). SAU ended the game at 49 percent from the field (35-for-72), 24 percent on three-pointers (4-for-17) and 87 percent from the free throw line (13-for-15).
UAM will return to action this Thursday, January 19 as the Weevils travel to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to take on GAC opponent Ouachita Baptist with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
