MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was taken down twice Saturday afternoon at home in a non-conference doubleheader against Washburn University by final scores of 14-4, and 6-2.
Arkansas-Monticello (2-4) struggled in game one against the Ichabods of Washburn (6-1) allowing 11 runs through the first four innings of play. WU extended its lead in the top of the sixth inning to 14-0, but the Weevils began to create a bit of a scoring run in the bottom half of the inning.
Marshall McPherson in a pinch hitting appearance singled up the middle to bring in Nick Piraino to get UAM on the board in the match-up. Brady Weiss followed up with a double to right field to bring in Brian Ray and McPherson. Finally Guy Halbert singled to bring home Weiss to put the score at 14-4. Despite two hits in the bottom of the seventh, Washburn took game one in the doubleheader after seven innings with a 10 run advantage.
The visiting Ichabods were on the board first in game number two as well and went on to build a 6-0 lead over the Weevils by the seventh inning. UAM battled back however with a couple scoring plays of its own. Solid plate discipline saw two straight bases loaded walks bring in two runs for Arkansas-Monticello to put the score at 6-2.
The Weevils could not generate any more offense unfortunately in the contest as Washburn went on to claim game two by a final score of 6-2.
UAM returns to action Tuesday, February 14 as the Weevils will host Union University (Tenn.) at Weevils Field in a non-conference match-up with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
