ADA, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split a Great American Conference doubleheader against East Central Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma falling in game one 6-3, and defeating the Tigers in game two 4-3.
UAM (3-6, 1-1 GAC) opened up the series against East Central (1-8, 1-1 GAC) with a Brian Ray home-run in the top of the first to take the early lead. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning to ECU, the Weevils regained the lead in the top of the fourth with a RBI double by Andres Rios, and a sacrifice fly by Austin Brakebill which brought in one run a piece.
Arkansas-Monticello could not generate any more offensive scores the rest of the match-up unfortunately as East Central went on to score four more runs to take the opening series contest, 6-3.
Game number two saw the Weevils once again score a run in the top of the first inning after a balk by the Tigers allowed Nick Piraino to cross the plate. East Central held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth, until Rios sent a ball deep over the wall in left field for a two-run home-run to even up the score.
Rios once again showed off his power in the top of the seventh inning with another home-run to left center this time around to give UAM the 4-3 lead.
The Weevils bullpen handled the match-up the rest of the stretch as Jared Libke (1-0) secured his first win of the season, and Dawson Moser (S,1) recorded his first save of the year throwing a scoreless seventh inning, and struck out two batters.
UAM returns to the field tomorrow, Sunday, February 19 as Arkansas-Monticello will conclude its series against East Central with one game scheduled for 11 a.m. in Ada, Oklahoma.
