MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split the day against Great American Conference foe Arkansas Tech Friday afternoon at Weevils Field with a game one loss at 2-0, and a game two victory at 3-1.
The opening contest for Arkansas-Monticello (24-13, 19-7 GAC) against ATU (26-15, 20-6 GAC) featured the Wonder Boys on the board first in the top of the third inning after scoring on a wild pitch. Tech later extended its lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to put the scoring line at 2-0 over the Weevils.
Offensively UAM only generated two hits in this match-up from Sean Wagner, and Alex Smith. Grant Black threw a complete game of 9.0 total innings, only allowing two earned runs and recorded one strikeout.
Game number two in the afternoon for UAM against Arkansas Tech saw the Weevils kick-start the scoring first after Nick Piraino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to see one run cross the plate.
Arkansas Tech went on to tie up the game in the top of the third, but the Weevils answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning with RBI singles from Guy Halbert and Andres Rios to give the home squad a 3-1 advantage.
Kris Brown (W, 4-3) started on the mound in this match-up throwing 5.0 total innings and only surrendered one earned run and stuck out three total.
Landon McFadden came in on relief to pitch one scoreless inning, and Dawson Moser (S, 5) threw the final inning to pick up his fifth save on the year.
UAM will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 15, as the Weevils play its final regular season home game of 2017 against Arkansas Tech at Weevils Field with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. Arkansas-Monticello will also honor its 2017 senior baseball class prior to the final series game with those festivities beginning around 11:30 a.m.
