CLEVELAND, Miss. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was defeated by non-conference opponent Delta State on the road by a final score of 13-10 Wednesday evening.
Arkansas-Monticello (25-14, 20-7 GAC) struck first in the top of the first inning against the Statesmen of DSU (34-8, 22-5 GSC) after a Sean Wagner single to center field which brought one run across the plate.
Delta State however tallied 11 total runs the following inning to gain a large advantage over the Weevils. UAM began to chip away at the DSU lead, scoring nine runs heading into the top of the ninth inning to cut the deficit down to 13-10 overall.
The Weevils unfortunately could not generate any more runs in the final inning and ultimately fell against the number six nationally ranked Statesmen by a final score of 13-10.
Nick Piraino led UAM offensively going 3-for-5 on the night with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and one double.
Lathan McFadden and Wagner each provided multi-hit days also with Wagner racking up three total runs batted in for the Weevils.
The pitching from Arkansas-Monticello was a collective effort as Jared Libke started the contest, and Michael Harrison, Drake Streeter, and Landon McFadden each made relief appearances as well.
UAM will be back in action next on Sunday, April 23, as the Weevils will travel to Searcy, Arkansas to take on Great American Conference adversary Harding University with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
